Experience the RFA Procedure

Receive Radiofrequency Ablation under local anesthesia at Richmond Vein Center with little to no pain in less than 45 minutes:

1. Mapping of the Saphenous Vein
2. Catheter Insertion

The provider typically injects dilute anesthetic around the vein that numbs the area, constricts blood from the vein, and provides a barrier between the vein and surrounding tissue.

3. Radiofrequency Delivery and Catheter Removal

Ultrasound imaging confirms placement as electrodes at the tip of the catheter heat the vein wall to 248*F. As the vein shrinks the catheter is gradually withdrawn, auto adjusting temperature for optimal results.

4. Vein Closing

Following the verification of vein closure blood is redirected to healthier veins.

Post Treatment Regimen

  • Wear compression stocking for first 48 hours (sleep in them)
    • Wear only during daily activity for the next 5 Days
  • No strenuous activities for 3 days (ex. heavy lifting)
  • Ambulation: 30 minutes daily for 7 days
  • Don’t be alarmed-It is normal to experience some tenderness, possible bruising and discharge watery fluid from the leg where local anesthesia was administered

Clinical studies show radiofrequency ablation significantly improves patient’s symptoms of leg discomfort, swelling and pain in just 1-2 weeks, with 90% of patients reporting durable relief. In fact, 98% of patients who have undergone RFA are willing to recommend it to a friend or family member.
